Health Careers Exploration Program (HCEP)

THE GOAL OF HCEP

The goal of HCEP is to provide Duke undergraduates who are interested in health-related careers a chance to explore the realities of such a profession.

There are Two Components of HCEP

1.  Volunteering in a Hospital in which the student becomes familiar with the life of a patient and learns valuable skills that are essential for any health care field such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, compassion, leadership, increased knowledge of medicine and current issues in health care.

2.  Health Professions Shadowing in which the student is exposed to the daily life of a health professional.

Both clinical and observational components are critical in providing insight into the health professions. In order to build skills necessary for working in this field, we begin the first phase of HCEP with patient exposure gained through volunteering at Duke Med. This is also a great way for students to assess their comfort level working in a hospital environment with people who are unwell.  Forty (40) hours of volunteering in the hospital is required in order to apply for the second, shadowing component.
