Jin-Soo Huh - Public Policy and Political Science

(Class of 2009)

Have you participated in an internship? If so, when and where?

Yes, I participated in the “John Edwards for President” Internship in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the summer of 2008.

Describe your internship?

I was a finance intern and research intern.  As a finance intern, I processed checks and prepared for fundraising events.  As a research intern, I researched the other candidates, their past policies, contributors, and legislators.  As an intern in general, I was given the opportunity to go on set of campaign commercial shootings, attend live debates in Charleston, join College Democrats and attend conventions to see John Edwards speak, and meet big-name people in the world of campaigning.  The overall experience was incredible; it was a tremendously fun and exciting atmosphere.

What is some advice you have for other students about finding a job or internship?

Do not panic.  There are tons of internships out there.  Use the Career Center and start your search early.  Do things that you are interested in.  It doesn’t necessarily have to relate to your career vision, because you will have a great time doing it and you will come away with improved professional development.  Utilize your resources: meet with career counselors, join Career Center mailing lists, and network: talk to friends, talk to professors, talk to everyone.

How has the Career Center helped you with your career search?

The Career Center is how I found out about the internship.  I am on the government/non-profit email listserv, and was emailed about the opportunity to work on the John Edwards campaign.  The Career Center basically found the internship for me; all I had to do was apply.

What has been the most valuable Career Center resource you have used?

I have used many of the Career Center’s resources such as Duke eRecruiting, the Internship Database, and information sessions.   I am also on certain listserves, which is actually how I find out about this internship.  The Career Center basically found the internship; all I had to do was apply.  I have also attended many Experts-in-Residence events, which are wonderful for gaining first-hand knowledge about certain careers.

How did your internship affect your career path?

Participating in this internship was extremely enjoyable.  It was fun to be a part of a campaign, which is something I knew I wanted to experience because it fits my interests so well.  But, I learned that the campaigning lifestyle is not for me.  I came away learning that I should pursue my other passions, and some times, this can be the most important lesson you learn from the experience
