What do you wish you had known about the Career Center early on at Duke?
The one thing that I wish I had done was to create a working resume early on. I was under the impression that I would not need to even begin working on mine at least until well into junior year. I now know that it is never too early to create even just a working resume and cover letter, and wish that I had stopped by the career center during my first year to get their help in creating these documents.
What do you think the Career Center's purpose is?
Ideally, I believe the Career Center would provide undergraduates with resources to prepare them for entering into the professional world. By that I mean, making resources and counselors available for helping students with creating resumes and cover letters in addition to helping to prepare students for interviews.
How do you plan on making use of the Career Center?
The principal way in which I plan to use the Career Center as a resource is creating a professional resume and cover letter. I have also found that the Career Guide is a very helpful publication in learning more about the services that the Career Center provides, in addition to giving general tips for how to prepare for interviews, etc.
Do you have any advice regarding career/internship search and/or the Career Center?
My one piece of advice is to get started early! The first step is as simple as familiarizing yourself with the resources that Duke makes available to you. Do not ever think that you are not important or old enough to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Career Center and other university departments.
