Assessments

Why take an assessment inventory?

Personality and interest inventories provide structure and focus for counselors and students.  They are often shortcuts to information collection and are more reliable than rating scales or structured interviews because observer biases can be controlled. They provide norms or standards of comparison. Assessment reports may help you
  •  Uncover unrecognized predispositions
  •  Confirm your career decisions/direction
  •  Help you communicate with family and others

What assessment inventories are available?

STRONG INTEREST INVENTORY
Use the SII to identify college major/graduate study field, career change, , or to find a vocation. The SII is based on the idea that individuals are more satisfied and productive when they work in jobs or at tasks that they find interesting and when they work with people whose interests are similar to their own. The SII takes about 25 minutes to complete and contains 317 items that measure your interests in a wide range of occupations, occupational activities, hobbies, leisure activities and types of people.  Your interests are compared to thousands of individuals who report being happy and successful in their jobs.  Your personalized report identifies your optimum career choices based on your interests and includes additional related occupations.

MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR
The MBTI® may help you improve work and personal relationships, increase productivity, and identify your leadership and interpersonal communication preferences. It is an instrument for measuring a person’s preferences, using four basic scales with opposite poles. The four scales are: (1) extraversion/introversion, (2) sensate/intuitive, (3) thinking/feeling, and (4) judging/perceiving. The various combinations of these preferences result in 16 personality types, typically denoted by four letters--for example, INTJ (Introversion, Intuition with Thinking and Judging)--to represent one’s tendencies on the four scales. A profile for each of the sixteen types consists of a list of characteristics frequently associated with each type.

How do I arrange to take an assessment inventory?

Make an appointment with a counselor to discuss the contribution an assessment inventory might make to your career exploration and planning. If you and your counselor decide you would benefit from the process, you will receive a copy of instructions for online administration.  When you finish the online assessment, call 660-1050 and ask for an appointment to review the results with your counselor.  Your report will be available to you during your follow-up appointment at the Career Center if you indicate clearly that you want to review your assessment results.
