Developing Language Skills and Competence

Most US employers expect job candidates to demonstrate proficiency in English.  This is considered essential in most firms and organizations for communicating effectively with clients, colleagues, and business partners.

There are various options within Duke University and the wider Durham community for developing your competence in English in preparation for the US job market.  International House hosts several programs, including the Duke Language Partners Program, the English Conversation Club, and the Spouses Group English Hour.  We encourage you to visit the International House website to learn about these programs and other language learning opportunities that may be available.  You may also inquire with International House about private ESL (English as a Second Language) tutors in Durham.

Other resources within Duke are:
1)    The American Experience Program, administered though Durham Technical Community College: A course designed for high intermediate and advanced students, with a flexible structure that allows students to polish their English language skills as they contrast and compare various world cultures with American culture. This is accomplished through lively and topical discussions, reading, writing, and use of the media (newspapers, magazines, videos, TV, etc.)
2)    Intensive ESL classes with the Duke Office of Continuing Education (with fees)
Note: Click on Evening & Weekend courses and look at their course selection
3)    English for International Students – classes for international graduate students (contact Maria Parker at maria.parker@duke.edu)
4)    Language Labs: Language Labs: English language tapes and SCOLA (TV news from over 40 countries) are available.
Locations: 114 Foreign Language Building, 660-3179 (West Campus) and 101 Carr Building, 684-3767 (East Campus).
