Medical Shadowing Programs

Health Careers Exploration Program

The Health Careers Exploration Program (HCEP) was developed to provide shadowing experiences for undergraduate students interested in health related careers.  Students who are considering the health professions are paired with medical mentors, providing the students with first-hand experiences related to the medicine. The expectation for the medical mentor is flexible, but the recommendation is for the mentor to spend 4 hours per week with the student.  Students are eligible to begin shadowing the summer of their freshman year, after attending five required workshops. Students can shadow during the academic year or during the summer.

  • Shadowing at Duke Medical Center or local facility during academic year
    • 48-hour commitment – Four hours per week for 12 weeks per semester
  • Summer Shadowing –at Duke or away
    • Three-week minimum, 48-hour commitment recommended.  Your assigned mentor will work with you to determine your schedule.

Students participating may be involved in activities such as:

  • Accompanying a mentor to see patients in clinics,
  • Accompanying a mentor into surgery (as appropriate)
  • Attending lectures,
  • Observing mentor's interactions with patients, family members and colleagues, and
  • Discussion with the mentor on a variety of issues related to the practice of medicine
If you are interested in participating or have any other questions, please contact The Career Center.
