Please provide a brief description of your current primary job
function:
I am General Counsel for the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers, and
Philips Arena. I handle all legal matters for each of these
entities, including player contracts, TV/Radio, Employment,
Intellectual Property, Promotions/Sweepstakes, General Corporate
and Litigation.
Briefly tell us about your career path?
Duke Law 1986-1988; U.S. Marine Corps Judge Advocate 1988-1991;
Commercial Litigation Associate in DC (Ginsberg, Feldman &
Bress) and NC (Moore & Van Allen) 1991-1999; Sports Agent
1993-1999 (Buoniconti Sports Management Group); Senior Counsel -
World Championship Wrestling 1999; Assistant General Counsel -
Turner Sports, Goodwill Games, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks,
Atlanta Thrashers and Philips Arena 2000-2004; General Counsel
Atlanta Spirit, LLC 2004-present.
Also served as USMCR Reserve Staff Judge Advocate for MAG-42 and
H&S BN, 4th FSSG in Marietta, GA.
What were some of your activities at Duke?
ATO, Varsity Football, Varsity Track
How has Duke influenced your success?
I believe my experiences at/connection with Duke are directly
responsible for almost every professional opportunity I have
received since leaving campus in 1988. I also met my wife at Duke,
got married at Duke Gardens, my son was born at Duke, etc., etc. It
is a great institution that has had an amazingly positive impact on
my life.
What is the best career advice you would give students
interested in your career field?
Make good contacts early and keep trying to break in - even if you
work for free.
What do you do in your free time?
Coach youth sports, play basketball, run
Where have you traveled in the past 5 years?
Wyoming, London, NY, San Francisco, Phoenix, LA, Munich, many
others
