Career Counseling

What can I do to prepare for an appointment?
Because time can move more quickly than expected during an appointment, it is helpful to consider in advance what you would like to accomplish with the time allotted.  If you are not there yet, do not worry.  Your first appointment goal can be to get yourself situated and determine what a good first step might be.
What can I expect in an appointment?
The nature of each appointment will vary based on your needs.  Appointments tend to be most helpful for a person who is looking for an ongoing conversation, career exploration guidance, or advanced search strategy assistance.  You can expect that the appointment will be focused on your concerns and oriented towards assisting you to set an action plan.  It is important to recognized that the appointments exist to focus, not replace, the work that you are doing independently.
How long are appointments?
Pre-scheduled appointments for undergraduate students are typically thirty minutes long.  Graduate student appointments are typically one hour.  However, a variety of services exist that might also suit your needs.  For example, advising consultations, office hours, and resource room “drop-ins” are typically shorter, but more frequently available.

How far in advance should I schedule an appointment?

The availability of appointments varies during different times of the year, but same-day appointments are not scheduled.

Busy months include September/October and January/February.  During these times a private, pre-scheduled appointment may be available with up to a two-week wait.  Outside of peak times, appointments are generally available within a few days of your request.

When appointment availability is limited, we intentionally increase availability during our drop-in hours; Monday-Thursday from 2:00-5:00pm and on Friday from 2:00-4:00pm.  We also offer additional services to accommodate the increased demand.
